About Us

Tanis Fiber Arts – Bright, Versatile and Inspiring colours.

Tanis Fiber Arts is an all Canadian company based in Montreal, Quebec that produces high quality hand dyed yarns. I started Tanis Fiber Arts in January of 2008 with no real plan, I just loved yarn and I loved colours! The TFA story has very humble beginnings - at first it was just me, conducting dyeing experiments in the kitchen of my old apartment. Its hard to believe how far we’ve come! Sure, we’re still working from home, but now we have a lovely little backyard studio, and instead of being alone in the kitchen, I get to work with my husband and best friend Chris all day, we’re a real old fashioned, family run business. The day to day operations are handled by just a few people, but it would never have been possible to get here without all the love and support of the knitters out there! Thanks to everyone who stops by the shop and blog to see what we’re up to.

Tanis

Tanis

Nobody loves yarn like Tanis. She is from a long line of knitters, and she always has a couple projects on the go; whether it’s a pair of socks for her dad or a sweater for Stella - its in her blood. Add that to her art school background and natural eye for colour and Tanis Fiber Arts was practically inevitable. Whether she is packing an order for delivery, working out a new colourway or sketching out a new pattern idea, Tanis truly loves every detail of running TFA and couldn’t imagine herself doing anything else.

Chris

Chris

Chris is Tanis’ husband and has been a full time TFA staffer since September 2009. Since then he has learned to dye under the watchful eye of Tanis, and has become the lead dyer here at TFA. Together Chris and Tanis dream up and develop all the colourways. Chris has also learned to knit, which really helped to broaden his perspective and deepen his understanding when it comes to our yarns. He never knew that he had such an interest in yarns and knitting, but as it turns out, he loves working at TFA!

Noreen

Noreen

Noreen is Tanis' mom. She is the mathematical mastermind behind the book-keeping at TFA. In addition to that, she is our elite test-knitter, and Tanis' partner in crime at all the trade shows. Most importantly, she is there for moral support. Tanis calls her five times a day to answer yarn related questions when Chris can't take it any more. Noreen is at the root of it all... she taught Tanis how to knit, the same way her mom taught her.

Noreen

Julie

Julie joined the TFA team in the Spring of 2011 and it’s hard to believe we ever functioned without her! She helps out with lots of online tasks from her home in Toronto, she pitches in on the blog and on Ravelry and maintains the TFA facebook page, Twitter account and Pinterest boards. She’s also a real added bonus to the TFA booth at knitting shows. As a talented designer Julie is also helping to round out the TFA pattern collection by contributing her own design ideas to the table. You can also find Julie at Knitted Bliss, her own knitting blog.

Stella

Stella

Honestly, not much help when it comes to dyeing or book keeping and a little too small for moving boxes. Stella is, however, a stunning knitwear model with a keen eye for colour and she keeps the mood light just by being herself. Stella has grown up literally surrounded by yarn. As a puppy she had an appetite for leather belts and zippers, but she has never once harmed a single skein of yarn... good girl!
